How to paint a sunset like this one. See other fine paintings available at Ron Turner Fine Art Web Site
It is actually very simple to paint this sunset. I'll explain how in this blog.
Items needed:You only need one paint brush (the flat brush 3/4" or 1" wide).
You only need these three oil colors: Titanium White, Cadmium Orange, and Prussian Blue.
Start Painting How To Paint A Sunset NowStart at the top of the canvas and paint about a third way down with Prussian Blue. While the blue is still wet use the Titanium White to blend in some clouds by lightly brushing up at an angle and horizontal back and forth so it doesn't look too even. Your painting doesn't have to match the above painting exactly but utilize the painting to give you an idea as you blend in the clouds.
Make sure the upper sky has larger clouds and smaller clouds towards the lower portion of the sky in order to give your painting depth. Depth is one of the most important aspects of any painting.
Using the orange paint, paint a strip about the width of the brush across the middle of the canvas.
Now using the white paint (while the orange is still wet), paint over the orange to make it lighter and so it appears brighter since its closer to the sun.
Continue painting with the white paint right up to the blue and white clouded sky that you completed earlier.
Now blend in the orange paint with light back and forth strokes so it looks like sunset on clouds.
Use the white paint to thicken up some of the cloud edges. You can do the same with the orange paint so it appears to be shining off the clouds. You can add lightly to some of the clouds inside the dark blue area as well.
All of the above should be done with wet on wet paint or on other words while all of the paint is wet.
Next lesson will be how to paint the bottom portion of the canvas as the ocean.
